I chose to take part in the school’s Gateway programme and after coming back from overseas I became interested in tourism. I met with Delwyn Roberts and she placed me in United Travel for four hours a week. I learnt to process information through computer programmes and make small bookings through their computer system. Although I enjoyed my time at the travel agents and learnt a lot I have decided that the travel industry is not my career path.

I was placed at Vet Plus for ten weeks working with Kim and Dan. In this time we visited farms in the Taupo area treating a variety of animals, including lame cows and also pregnancy testing. TB testing of deer was a real experience as I enjoy working with large animals. This placement has confirmed my career pathway towards veterinary science.

I worked at Chris Mitchell Motorcycles. My knowledge of motorcycles was pretty good as I grew up on a farm, so my placement was enjoyable as I learnt even more skills. I was given a project to rebuild a motor cycle that had been stored for two years. Every week I worked on this until the motor cycle was usable. I have been offered part time work after school.
